The dealer spins a small white ball in the opposite direction of the turning wheel. Bets are paid off when the ball comes to rest in one of the numbered compartments. You play with your own distinct, colored chips and determine their value with your "buy-in." You bet by placing chips on the layout, which is colored and numbered the same as the wheel. While the ball is spinning you can place bets on one number or various combinations of numbers or sections of numbers. There are 38 numbers on the wheel: 0, 00, and 1 through 36.
